Letter to A Podcaster

LETTER TO A PODCASTER

So the other day I found your podcast. The Headline called out to a nagging question I was currently attempting to tackle in a different way. I scanned the size, at only 20 minutes. it was a no-brainer that I would listen.

But then, the introduction began and began and began again. You promised insights that did not surface until 10 minutes into your podcast. Ten Minutes, I’m a saint for staying for giving you the benefit of doubt in an 8-second attention span world.

How frustrating!

I’m busy with countless tasks and unlike a blog article, I must listen to every word, so please plan your content with me in mind. Be concise with administrative tasks which offer no value you to me. I’m trapped in your linear format. Please think of a time you felt trapped and how it made you feel? This time I powered through because you promised me something. We are in a commitment now, a knowledge exchange. But, you have the microphone, I’m listening.

The worst part, the insight I was waiting for you to deliver was a paper cut out of every marketing article, class, or conversation I had ever consumed. I know the importance of goals. What I do not know is how to reach mine.

I listened further as you offered the headlines to all of the insights I desired but you offered no solutions instead, you referenced me to other podcasts. Your past episodes.

Other podcasts?

I was struggling through this one. There is no way, I’d commit to more podcasts.

At this stage I was beyond the halfway point, layers of introduction finally ending. The headlines had been restated, finally, a promise of a point I could run with, then it was over.

I understand this was obviously not the podcast for me. And kudos for a well-written headline, the hook did snag me. I did need a map to success but not your success. I expected tactics and tools to help me find my own not an advertisement of all the content. Content that dragged out what ended up being a collection of subheadlines in a blog post I’ve already read.

So here is a list of what I wish you had provided me. If you were me, what would you add to this list?

Next time, please, give me:

  • A short intro, and please ditch the dated music.

  • A single sentence summary of what to expect and who you will be taking to, and why you invited them.

  • Next, Talk to someone or site someone and own your story. I want to know your options are challenged.

  • Better yet, I want to know that you know they are opinions because if you are just stating facts, I’m bored unless they are your facts.

  • I want to be inspired but I also need ROI on my time. Give me specific information related to the topic, the website, report stats, or people to follow.

  • And please know you are not the product to upsell. I’m here, you’ve got me, I’m already trying you out.

  • Don’t tell me how to feel, give me your perspective, tell me your personal story. I need to empathize with you to trust you.

  • Finally, ask yourself would you listen to you? I love interviews where it is obvious even the interviewer is excited to be there.

Thoughts? I’d love to hear them on Social media @WildfireEffect
